04 / OUR STORY

From a dorm room.
With a bigger idea.

Kifaru began in a dorm room, as a project between family and friends. The idea was to bring a connection to Kenya into something people could wear every day: a belt with character, colour and a story behind it.

We were drawn to Maasai beadwork for its detail and traditional significance. Our aim is to celebrate that heritage through everyday style, and invite people to look beyond the pattern to the culture and history that inspired our project.

Our aim is to make those details part of everyday dressing. A favourite pair of jeans. A plain shirt. One piece that makes the whole outfit feel more like you.

BEYOND THE PATTERN

Beadwork with
a deeper story.

Maasai beadwork.

Maasai beadwork is part of a living cultural tradition. Its significance goes beyond decoration: colours and arrangements can carry meaning, while skills and knowledge are shared between generations.

At the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Maasai artist Susan Naserian Nketoria described learning from her mother and working alongside other women to choose patterns and colours. That human context matters as much as the finished piece.

Kenya is home to many distinct beadwork traditions. We celebrate that richness without assigning a traditional meaning to an individual belt pattern unless its maker has explained it.

KIFARU

Swahili for rhinoceros

THE NAME. THE CONNECTION.

More than
a symbol.

Growing up, visits to conservancies—including Ol Pejeta, home to the last northern white rhinos—made conservation personal. Through school, we donated to research programmes and helped raise awareness of poaching and its effects.

Those experiences stayed with us. Kifaru means rhinoceros in Swahili, and our name carries that connection: to Kenya, to those visits, and to wildlife worth protecting.

Our belt names carry that connection too. The Lewa, The Borana, The Solio and The Pejeta take their names from conservancies in Kenya working to protect rhinos and grow their populations. Each name honours the places helping secure a future for these extraordinary animals.

As Kifaru grows, we hope to use this platform to help more people understand the threats facing rhinos and other endangered wildlife. For now, that starts with sharing the story and encouraging people to learn more.

How much is a belt?

Every belt is £40. Delivery charges and returns details will be confirmed before ordering opens.

How should I care for my belt?

Gently wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking, harsh cleaners and direct heat. Allow leather to dry naturally and keep leather treatments away from the beadwork.

How do I find my size?

Measure a belt you already wear from the buckle pin to your usual hole. This is your belt measurement; it can differ from your trouser size. Our full size guide will be available before ordering opens.
